georgy-konstantinovich-zhukov: Revolutionaries mount a Soviet tank stationed outside the Parliament building on October 25th during an originally peaceful meeting with the intervention force. The Soviet commander saw his job more as to maintain a ceasefire than actively put down the crowds, and saw fit to escort the peaceful demonstrators. After relatively friendly interaction, Hungarian Security Forces opened fire on the crowd from nearby buildings, and the crowd dispersed while those who were armed returned fire. Some of the Soviets in Kossuth Square also fired on the Hungarian soldiers in the mistaken belief that they had been the targets. 75 people were killed and over 200 wounded in the confrontation, and it soured whatever good will was left on the part of the Revolutionaries.
